Hi. My name is Gill Shiels.
I am a self-taught artist who only began painting in watercolour in 2000.
My career was in nursing. I worked as a registered nurse, midwife, district nurse, then manager in the NHS, finishing my career at the Welsh Office as an advisor for primary care.
I have always loved watercolour, the transparency and sense of light I think is beautiful. My subjects are varied and my colour palette varies from high key to subdued.
I only use artist quality paints and good quality paper. My style varies from representational to abstract.
In 2018 I began to experiment in Alcohol ink and so enjoyed it I have continued in this medium as well as watercolour. I additionally use metal mixtures and diamond dust.
Watercolour is always hard work and is a very unforgiving medium whereas I find alcohol inks to be relaxing and easy.
Both of them have their place in my life
I am married to David. We are both retired and we live in Norton, Stockton on Tees.
